Should I buy an electric vehicle?

Amazing how many times this question has come across the counter.

Before I tell you my opinion, or even if I will, first understand what you will have to do in order to own an electric vehicle.

#1  You will have to upgrade your house electrical service box from 100 amps to 150 amps, in order to accommodate the extra power needed to charge the EV batteries.

#2  Understand that the tires will cost more, because they will have to carry more weight than a hydrocarbon vehicle of similar size, because the batteries are very heavy.

#3   Very many of the same things that wear out on a hydrocarbon vehicle will also wear out on an EV.  Brake pads, brake rotors, wheel bearings, ball joints, struts, shocks, hoses(yes : ) surprised?), steering systems, windshields, wiper blades, door handles, computer upgrades(re-flash), alignments, light bulbs, body repair, camera calibration....

#4  Whether you like it or not, the only way to power EVs is with fossil fuel because renewable energy sources cannot meet the demand with existing load, much more the added load of EVs.  And, the much over used answer these days of just using more natural gas, is not grounded in realtime intelligence.  Natural gas comes from fossil fuels...it is not as clean as you think it is. Where are all the bottle gas tractors, trucks, and cars, of the 1980's?  Where did the direct burning of liquified petroleum gas, go?  Now we are going to burn it indirectly to do the same thing-transport people and goods?

These are just a few things without addressing the environmental impact of the batteries. but hopefully this jolts some of us into reality about EVs.  EVs do not give a us a free ride into a zero pollution, less maintenance, utopia.  They just look like they do.

Next blog, reasons why I like electric vehicles.  Not saying I wouldn't own one : ).
